Handmade Throwing Stars

Quick Answer

Throwing stars (shuriken) are multi-pointed steel discs designed for throwing in martial arts and sport. Louis Martin throwing stars are stamped and ground from high-carbon steel, precision-balanced for consistent flight in throwing competitions and martial arts training.

Precision and balance are everything in a throwing star — an unbalanced shuriken won't spin true. Louis Martin's throwing stars are individually inspected for balance and ground to consistent specifications for sport throwing and martial arts training.

Characteristics & Construction

Steel and Hardness

Our throwing stars are made from 420 stainless and high-carbon steel, heat-treated to 52–55 HRC — hard enough to hold a point but not brittle under throwing stress.

Point Geometry

Four-point (standard shuriken) and six-point designs are available. Each point is ground to a consistent angle for penetration and to enable self-righting during flight.

Care & Maintenance

  1. 1

    Dry after use

Throwing stars accumulate surface moisture from target contact. Dry thoroughly after use to prevent rust.

  2. 2

    Touch up points

A sharpening stone or diamond file can restore bent or dulled points after hard target contact.

Throwing Stars — Frequently Asked Questions

Are throwing stars legal?
Laws vary significantly by state. Shuriken are banned in some states and legal in others. Always verify your local laws before purchase or carry.
What are throwing stars made of?
Quality throwing stars are made from high-carbon or stainless steel, heat-treated for hardness. Avoid cheap pot metal or zinc alloy throwing stars — they are inaccurate, unbalanced, and dangerous to the user.
