Louis Martin Custom Knives
Handmade Bowie Knives
Quick Answer
A Bowie knife is a large fixed-blade American knife characterized by a clip-point blade typically 6–12 inches long, a cross-guard, and a substantial handle. Louis Martin Bowie knives are hand-forged in the traditional American style with Damascus and high-carbon steel blades.
The Bowie knife is America's knife — born of the frontier, proven in the wilderness, and celebrated by collectors worldwide. Louis Martin's handmade Bowie knives honor this legacy with massive, beautifully balanced blades forged in the American tradition, worthy of display and hard use alike.
Characteristics & Construction
Blade Length and Profile
Our Bowie knives feature blades from 6 to 12 inches, with the signature clip-point profile — a concave curve at the spine near the tip that creates a sharp, penetrating point. The broad blade belly excels at slicing, skinning, and chopping.
Cross-Guard Construction
All Louis Martin Bowie knives feature a traditional brass or nickel silver cross-guard, protecting the hand during thrusting use. Guards are individually fitted and soldered for permanent integration with the blade.
Handle Scales
Bowie knife handles are built for a secure full grip — we use stag deer antler, walnut, rosewood, and exotic stabilized woods. Handles are sized for large hands and designed for extended field carry.
Sheath
Each Bowie knife ships with a heavy-duty hand-stitched leather sheath with an integrated belt loop and snap retention strap. The sheath is sized to match the blade length.
Care & Maintenance
- 1
Clean the guard-blade junction
Moisture and debris collect at the joint between the cross-guard and blade. Use a cotton swab to clean this area after each use — rust in this junction is the most common Bowie maintenance issue.
- 2
Oil the blade
Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or Renaissance Wax to the blade after cleaning. For display Bowies, Renaissance Wax provides superior long-term protection without yellowing.
- 3
Condition the leather sheath
Apply leather conditioner (neatsfoot oil or Leather Honey) to the sheath twice per year. Dry leather sheaths crack and lose retention.
- 4
Inspect the handle for movement
Grasp the blade tang and attempt to twist the handle. Any movement indicates a loose handle that should be re-epoxied before further use.
- 5
Sharpen at low angle
Bowie knives are sharpened at 20–25° — slightly higher than hunting or chef knives — to preserve the thick edge geometry designed for chopping and prying tasks.
