Louis Martin Custom Knives
Handmade Tactical Tomahawks
Quick Answer
A tactical tomahawk is a modern interpretation of the traditional Native American tomahawk, designed for military, law enforcement, and outdoor use. Louis Martin tactical tomahawks are hand-forged with hardened axe heads and durable handles for throwing, chopping, and breaching tasks.
The tomahawk is America's original tactical tool — centuries before the AR-15, the tomahawk was the defining weapon of American frontier warfare. Louis Martin's handmade tactical tomahawks honor this heritage with hand-forged heads and purpose-built handles that serve equally as field tools and collectibles.
Characteristics & Construction
Head Forging
Each tomahawk head is hand-forged from high-carbon steel and precision-ground. Cutting edge geometry is optimized for chopping efficiency; spike or hammer poll options are available.
Handle Materials
Tactical tomahawk handles in our lineup use American hickory (traditional, shock-absorbing), fiberglass composite (weather-resistant, uniform), and G10 (maximum strength-to-weight). All handles are fitted and pinned by hand.
Care & Maintenance
- 1
Inspect the handle eye
The head-to-handle joint is the tomahawk's critical junction. Inspect for any looseness before throwing or chopping use. Soak wooden handles in linseed oil to prevent drying and shrinkage.
- 2
Oil the head
Apply a coat of mineral oil to the head after use to prevent rust.
- 3
Sharpen the bit
Sharpen the cutting edge at 25–30° on a coarse whetstone or bastard file, then refine with a fine stone.
